ICC, the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology, would like to invite you to attend the International Symposium on Bioactive Compounds in Cereal Grains and Foods, to be held on 24-25 April 2014, in Vienna, Austria, and/or to submit a paper for oral or poster presentation. BOKU - the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna will be the host of this 1.5 day event, which will attract some 120 participants from around the globe providing up-to-date information in the area of bioactives research on health benefits and food uses, innovative processes and product development, market opportunities and added value specialty products from around the globe. Renown speakers from Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa will give in-depth insight in this booming area of research and development.
This symposium will be beneficial for dieticians and nutritionists, health conscious consumers, food businesses, food manufacturers, food scientists and food developers, policy makers from the agricultural and health sectors, providers of food grade ingredients and plant food supplements.
It has long been recognised that cereals should be our most important staple food, as they are especially good sources of starch, dietary fibre, and many micronutrients. More recently, a large body of research has revealed that cereals are additionally a rich source of bioactive compounds, also known as phytochemicals or phytonutrients. These cereal bioactives have been shown to have many important effects associated with the prevention and alleviation of so-called lifestyle diseases. Their potential actions include prevention and reduction of oxidative stress, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive and cardiovascular disease prevention. To date, however, most research work has involved in vitro studies with extracts from cereal grains. Researchers are now taking the work to a new level with actual food products and vivo studies. Additionally, the focus has widened from the more familiar common cereals to include the ancient grains of South America and Africa. This timely ICC Symposium will capture the state of the art and explore the way forward in the rapidly developing science of cereal bioactives. These and more topics will be discussed in a symposium, conveniently organised right after the Healthgrain Forum Spring Meeting in Vienna, Austria, 23-24 April 2014.
